Which tool is the right one for the job? Depends on the job…your skill level, and budget (time and financial).

Speaking as another amateur who does this as a hobby.

Blocs 5 looks excellent (Mac too old to run it to say definitely), and can be extended further with Blocs Plus, 3rd party brics, or coding if you have the ability.

If I was starting anew I’d probably have gone with it.
I started with RW over 10 years ago and bought it because of Stacks, one review at the time mentioned it was an essential purchase back then!

Keep up the good work @Norm , Blocs for iPad also seems to be shaping up nicely. More tools in the toolkit, and healthy competition, are always a good thing.

Volt CMS?

Loving the debate, hopefully it won’t lead to an eventual meet up down a dark alley for a scrap (joking, honestly joking). Personally I think it is fair to say that both Blocs and Stacks look great. I’m far too invested in Stacks with time, learning curve, all the little snippets of usefullness over time that have taken many hours to figure out to do just a little thing that is unique and superb with frameworks etc to change course to a new platform.

I think it is fantastic that devs are thinking (or are actually doing at the moment) to develop for both Blocs and Stacks. One platform feeds the other platform with devs and popularity for each platform Blocs and Stacks. Bit like Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop etc for both Mac and PC. Devs make stacks and port to Blocs, devs make blocs/bricks and port to Stacks, devs stay in business and keep making wonderful stuff. I’ve started in Stacks, amassed a range of Stacks and use F6 so I’m in the Stacks camp. Plus it does everything I want.

However… looking at Volt CMS with its capabilities and buy once deploy multiple projects, this is just what I needed for a project a month ago, would have snapped it up at the time if available for Stacks, instead figured a different approach. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t consider buying Blocs and Volt CMS for a future project that requires similar again in that circumstance. However I could imagine I would end up down the rabbit hole of “Arrrgh! I want to use stack x by dev y in this project also”.

I think both platforms are great, Isaiah is fantastic guy when a support issue has been required, a genuine human being, I support his virtuous nature through the hassle he has had over the last year. Norm of Blocs I see is a fellow North East of England guy like me (according to the website) and is producing a great product by all accounts.

Stacks does everything I want, I support it, I support the dev and will continue to do so. But it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t also consider a parallel system for a different purpose or approach also.

With animation software I use five different packages, each for different purposes, 3D, 2D bones-based animation, vector only etc, more than often I also combine for different purposes, happy to use creative software in parallel as one size never fits all for me. I look at the Stacks/Blocs in a similar way.

Back to the opening line though, any plans for Volt CMS for Stacks? I’m in if there is…

Yes it is fantastic that Jannis’s Blocs Volt CMS will fill a currently missing solution in Stacks when it is ported to Stacks. If I recall correctly Volt CMS was released back at the end of 2019! and is now a mature well established Bric.

Maybe more of the Blocs Brics, Blocs and templates will be ported to Stacks. It would be fair to say that will largely depend on what happens in the future to RW and Stacks and whether porting to RW would financially be worth doing.

Yikes, managing those must be a real headache. It’s almost as if you need to add a third party add-on for every single meaningful feature.

I think this illustrates just how much easier and practical it is to manage your web design toolset with Blocs, which has the bulk of this type of functionality built into the core app.

I also imagine there must be a lot of variations in code quality when you are dependent on add-ons for pretty much everything.

Factor in from that huge list, the developers who no longer provide support, can’t be contacted or no longer have anythng to do with Rapidweaver and conflicting versions or JS as well as duplicated font and icon files, and you have a heady mixture of potential problems.

@kent you actually reported a very similar issue just 1 day ago in that you added a stack from 1 developer that broke your site. You were lucky that the developer had the incentive to find the issue and fix it.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t really give us much to go on without knowing exactly what each stack does, or indeed if the stacks still work :-(

I suspect that was the intention. But it is a meaninless long list of odd names. It certainly doesn’t show what Stacks is capable of. Examples of websites built with these stacks would be far better.

I doubt that Norm has any knowledge of Joe’s stacks? Bear in mind that Bootstrap5 has a very healthy set of form components and you can also use BS5 Form templates or Form Generators such as Bootstrap 5 Email Templates - free & responsive themes to build the exact form you want and then just paste it into Blocs. There no bigger community support than that for Bootstrap.

No, as Blocs uses Bootstrap CSS Stylesheet references, which you aren’t able to use in HTML emails.

Email template design is not a feature of Blocs.

Regarding posting info from a form to Google docs, there is not a Bric to my knowledge that does this. However, there is nothing that would prevent anyone setting this up manually and tapping into the Google API. But it would require some coding and writing your own post script.

@Webdeersign Yes, and the discussion about Blocs is in a forum named RapidWeaver for All…, and it seems that you have a strong interest in promoting Blocs within this forum. It is worth noting that your behaviour may come across as belittling the RW/Stacks platforms and using manipulation and bullying tactics. I am simply, with my limited capacity, trying to be a counterweight to that. RW/Stacks is not as bad as you are trying to give us the impression of.

If you’re basing your opinion of Garry on this thread, I could se why you might say that, but if you look at his contribution to this forum and stacks in general (he has quite a bit invested in Stacks working) you would come to a very different conclusion. He has given away free templates and has been prolific in promoting Source and demonstrating its capabilities.

We all want a bit more certainty since Realmac messed everything up and Blocs may be able to provide that.

@Bazza Yes, I actually agree with this. But as you can imagine I have no interest in losing my investment in Stacks. I still have faith in Isiah to deliver an alternative to RW/Stacks with Stacks Pro. I have Blocs App since version 3 I think, I also have the newest version, so I am supporting Blocs also. But I have never used it much because I feel very limited with the special functions I need. I am not a technical person too much, so what I have been able to do with RW and Stacks is kind of amazing for me. Anyway, I will keep quiet now, I got my say, so I am content. I hope I did not offend @Webdeersign too much, he has helped me a lot also. I have several of his projects, some of which I bought just to learn how to do stuff. As has been said many times, the RW stacks developers are the kindest and most helpful developers you could hope for.
