Big Sur, only because it came with the M1 Mac, I rarely ever upgrade OS and hold on to one that is working well for me for as long as posible. I always expect teething problems with a new OS. Loving the reasoning, thinking and consideration behind the initial ask for this question.

I have one audio production setup with a 2011 Mac running Mac OS 10.10.5 Still master and mix 2022 grammy winning music albums like day one. It’s up to you to believe if this is true or not, I’m completely honest.

Just to give folks a little bit of news on where all this data is pulling me…
There is a new version of the Stacks Plugin coming soon. It will require Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra from 2016. That’s the same as the current version so not too many surprises, there.
However as with most of our releases, there are some sacrifices that we have to make to bring compatibility that far back (8 years!!!). One of the new views, the Stats view with a dynamic list of stacks that shows all the types of stacks on the page (and even more in Stacks Pro) requires Big Sur as it uses some of the new animated table views to shift the contents around as you update the page.
But all other new features like the new menu, key bindings, smart groups, etc. — those all work back to Sierra, though the UI does look a bit different. In some cases I have to have a whole separate UI design to support those older versions as Big Sur really changed pretty much everything.
And the app…
Stacks Pro (the app that were hoping to ship by the end of the year) will require Big Sur all around. That lets us use the new fancy window designs with the full height splitters that I think look really clean and nice.
Our hope moving forward is to ship new versions much more often and support at least two prior releases and one upcoming release of macOS. However, there are always some challenging years (like the Big Sur year) where a lot changes and major shifts in user interface means backward compatibility across those boundaries is really hard. So I’m afraid there are no future guarantees that we can always be as flexible as we can be this year. But I promise to try as hard as I can.
All signs point to some grand unification of all the Apple OS’s — I suspect that will be our next challenging landmark. I’m both looking forward yo it as a user and dreading it a little as a developer. 🤣
Personally now I have one laptop machine running Monterey with Ventura in a sandboxed virtual machine for safety.
And the Stack Plugin gets built on the build server, a desktop machine that’s running Big Sur.
I bounce between using my M1 MacBook Air (now fully entrenched as one of my all time favorite Macs ever) and my beast, a 16 hyper-thread, dual 8GB GPU, 32GB Intel hackintosh that makes even my M1 machine feel kind of slow.
I’m really dying to update my hackintosh to Ventura so I can use the latest Xcode on both machines. The last couple of versions of Xcode have come with some really substantial UI and and productivity improvements (quite a few of which have inspired Stacks Pros much sleeker UI refinements — and this years Stacks Plug-in’s focus on productivity improvements).
If you follow me on Twitter you know that I’m not a super fan of some of Apple’s changes this year (omg the System Prefs, what were they thinking) and sometimes my opinions get a bit spicy — but the Xcode improvements in the past two major updates make all the growing pains worth it.
How ‘bout you guys, any apps out there that you think have an amazing UI? Or you love something else about what they’re doing?
Me I like Xcode, VS Code, Bear Notes, Slick Shot, Gif Fox and I seem to use Discord for more and more — I was skeptical at first, but my Gen Z kids (now adults themselves, do everything with Discord. I guess you could say this old fog learned a new trick. I like it now!
I’ll definitely be setting up some type of Discord server for Stacks soon.

Thanks for the update Isaiah, and good luck with the ongoing development of the Stacks plugin and the Stacks App. We’re all looking forward to the new goodness that will be well worth waiting for.
My social media presence is mostly limited to FB even though I rarely post myself and I hate their algorithm that chooses what and when I see posts, even from friends and those I follow.
I gave up on Twitter when the chronological display seemed to vanish, and now it shows me random posts and I can’t find what I do want to see. I never really got into Instagram and that seems to have turned into a sort of Twitter feed now.
I haven’t used Discord, although I know a lot of people do. I think I’m even older than you, so maybe I’ll have to learn a few new tricks too! :)

I used to have a Hackintosh, but it wasn’t stable enough to trust my business with it. Like Jailbreak, it was fun, but the bad surprises made me stop jailbreaking…

Definitely one of the things that makes me buy an app. It need to look very good. Here are the apps that look amazing for me: hijack, Cleanshot, Sleeve, IXeau, Affinity, SnippetsLab, and so on… you get the idea.

I just updated from 11.6 to 12.6 without any real issues…
The only two small issues Xcode Clang reset/install & SpamSieve preference has to be reset…
This an older system but wanted to update it before MacOS 13 comes out.
