That was the terrible thing about that govt scrapage scheme. Perfectly good cars with at least another 10 years in them were replaced by more polluting diesels that required a huge additional amount of energy/pollution to create.
I had a neighbour who “scrapped” a pristine 10 year old VW Golf and got £2000 off the cost of a new VW Golf. The Golf was worth £2500 on We Buy any Crap, and he could have easily haggled and paid a lot less for the new Golf. His big thing however, was that his old petrol Golf would be crushed and taken out of the eco system. When someone offered £2000 to buy the Golf he refused and had it scrapped.
