Now that I know a bit more about Discord, I understand why it is the way it is — 70% of its users are gamers, and it is designed to facilitate gamer discussion/collaboration (a very different demographic from the RW/Stacks community). Its business model is unclear — whatever money it makes seems to come from paid ‘Nitro’ upgrades of various features, but like much of the entrepreneurial web, it’s burning through capital investment (not clear how viable that makes it going forward, but that is not unique to Discord).
Anyway, I don’t think the problem is non-essential chat, although that clearly makes it even more confusing. I couldn’t find anything in the Stacks area before that all started, and still don‘t get why posts and comments are presented in haphazard date order. Indeed I have no idea how the threads work — I just seem to get caught in endless death-loops.
What we need in terms of customer support from Isiaiah could be much better served by a platform like this — I totally second ‘Stackpro5all’. It could even be served by the Stacks area on this site. Discord isn’t just wasting Isiaiah’s time: it’s wasting everybody’s time.
