Uses for an old iMac

I’ve got an old iMac that I recently replaced with a mac mini. It is a late 2013 27" and was generally in good working order. I’ve put it up for sale but havent been getting many bites.

Curious if anyone has any good/creative ideas for repurposing it? I don’t believe this model is able to be used as a second monitor (and my desk doesnt have much space for another monitor anyway). I may just see if a neighbour kid could make use of it but wondering if anyone here has any good ideas

I have a 2011 one under my desk and have the same question! It’s too big to have up top or anywhere for that matter. Too slow to handle data!! Mac mini’s are great

You guys can use an iMac as a media server or something similar, just remember that connecting it to the internet may pose some security risks.

I am in similar situation, except my old computer is monitor-less (late 2013 MacPro). I am still using the old monitor from the same year with my new MacStudio, though, because it still is a great monitor (Apple Cinema 27").

I haven’t decided yet what to do with my old workhorse. I have trouble letting it go…

@fapkogi Hi, I’m also in this case. Maybe this could interest you : Linux on IMac.
I use Debian and I will try it when I’d have time and courage 🤞

I have been using Open Core Patcher for a long while now. I have successfully patched 8 older iMac’s. Working on a 16,2 iMac ATM.

Hey, Bruno,

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, thanks. Most likely, I will just keep my old MacPro as a last resort backup computer.

I have a friend with several old Mac’s. He install Linux on them and uses them that way. He used one to run Zoom sessions for our FamilySearch Center during Covid.

I use my 2012 Quad Core Mac mini as a Plex media centre and Karaoke Machine in my living room. I also use it connected to a record player, using Audio Hijack to bring back the lower levels of the record to play over a surround sound system… Sooo many uses for old Macs.

Karaoke would’ve been a fun idea. I ended up giving it to my parents so it is still getting some new life

For really old Macs, the best answer is to convert them to Linux. I put Mint on my 2007 Macbook Air and it works really well. I replaced the battery, too, but it still only gives about 4 or 5 hours.

What kind of uses do you use lines for on the air?

At the moment it’s my only laptop, if you exclude an excruciatingly bad Toshiba which can only run on the mains. I’m using it in research libraries (where I can get access to academic resources) and for anything I have to do on the run, so nothing very demanding. It’s quite good for Zoom meetings and I use it to run LaTeX (although the Mac distribution of TeX is easier to use) and general office tasks such as writing and spreadsheets. To be honest, i’m not getting the most out of it at the moment. It’s much faster and more capable than my wife’s much newer Windows laptop.

The odd thing is, I have a 2011 iMac which I’ve totally failed to install Linux on.
