Source in Stacks 6

Hi Stuart,

I can’t remember where I saw it, but when isaiah first started issuing betas you did a ‘temporary’ rework of the Source theme. I am still using it and just started reworking a large site and wondered if there was now an up to date version.

Secondly, navigation is my big bugbear, I have a working system using Grid and Scribe, but has anyone slightly more intelligent than me come up with an elegant navigation solution?!

Hi @channonite

I do have an alternative theme that enables navigation in the Stacks 6 beta. More details here:

I haven’t actually opened the beta for a while so let me test things with the latest version and then i will pass on to you. Might be next week though before I get a chance.

p.s. Stacks 6 is still a good bit off being ready to build real / live sites so I wouldn’t recommend that you spend too much time reworking your large site in it quite yet.

Hi @habitualshaker Thanks for the info, and yes please, forward me the theme when you have tested it.

This has all come as a perfect storm for me. I had a 300+ page football fan site built over a number of years, which was cobbled together using so many different stacks. Great for so long, but has suddenly started causing problems with some old scripts hidden away in the depths. After a lot of thought, I have decided to take down the whole site and just have a basic site, probably for the rest of this year, or until Stacks is more bullet-proof. The new football season is approaching fast, but I realised that by keeping the pages simple with Source, using Markdown for the text, and the HTML stack for Getty images, I can probably get through to May next year, before adding back in the info from previous seasons.

Thanks for all you do with Source. It is simple and makes sense to me, a reasonably tech aware 74 year old…

Hi Stuart

Is it worth rebuilding a new/existing site in Stacks 6 using the beta and your embedded theme using source or just use classic and port over at a later date?

Will it be easy to swap from RW to stacks 6/source?

Hi @Nigelp -

I wouldn’t recommend doing anything in Stacks 6 just now beyond beta testing it and playing with its current capabilities. There are a few areas that are not implemented yet (e.g. resources, partials, layouts etc).

It should be easy to lift and shift sites from RW to Stacks at whatever point you choose to do so. That would need to happen by copying and pasting stacks across initially but I believe the plan at some point is to have the app be able to open existing stacks project files.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Stuart

Thanks for that. Looks like it’s all too Beta for now so I will do any rebuild in RW and source and port over later.

That’s exactly what I am doing, although I am ‘playing’ with the Beta + Source to get a feel for how it will be in the near future. So far, I am pleased with what I am seeing. There are still a huge amount issues to deal with, but I have nothing but admiration for Isaiah and his helpers/supporters.

I am an old dog who doesn’t care to learn too many new tricks…ha, ha. I took a look at the competition and decided I can wait for my old, reliable friend… :grinning:

@habitualshaker - I’m testing around with Stacks 6 Beta 48. After updating the Source stack/theme it says to enable navigation in the theme settings. However, there are no settings available, see screenshot

Hi @Juergen

I’ve messaged you with a link to the updated theme that needs to be used. This will be bundled with Source in a future update.
